ATM Information
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) was a cell-based switching technology designed to carry voice, video, and data over a single network infrastructure. The ATM Forum was the industry consortium that developed and published the standards.
ATM Forum Standards Documents
These documents were originally available via FTP from the ATM Forum (up to 1/11/97). The key specifications included:
- ILMI v1 — Interim Local Management Interface
- LANE v1 — LAN Emulation version 1
- LANE v2 — LAN Emulation version 2
- MPOA v1 — Multi-Protocol Over ATM version 1
- PNNI v1 — Private Network-to-Network Interface version 1
- UNI v4 — User-Network Interface version 4
- Circuit Emulation
ATM Speeds
ATM line rates are based on the SONET/SDH optical carrier hierarchy. The formula for calculating the speed is:
Speed = OC level × 51.8
| ATM Speed | Speed |
|---|---|
| OC3 | 155 Mbps |
| OC12 | 622 Mbps |
| OC48 | 2488 Mbps |
