Around the Bay in a Day

Sorrento

Set off from Alexandra Gardens at 5:30AM with Stephan, Dave, Duncan, Warwick, and Michael Cole, said bye to Warwick as he headed for the Westgate.

The C5 group hit beach road, and the hammer went down, a couple of fast groups went past, a call went out, we jumped on, and we were doing over 35kmh a few seconds later. Duncan got a tack through his gatorskin which called for a quick repair, then we were back on the road flying along. Drafting and using the slight tailwind (if there was one) to our advantage.

Then we hit the hills, I told the lads I would see them at the top, and thankfully they waited for me, then we hit another big hill and they waited again, waving me through, but gravity has its rewards and I was coasting at over 60kmh, Duncan and Michael caught up but Stephan and Dave couldn't get through the traffic. The C5-2 cruised for a while, then a nice fast group went past and we jumped on, the nasty riders were averaging over 37kmh with surges to 42kmh, Michael and Duncan moved the middle of the pack, and looked comfortable, I was holding on fine, till we came to a small hill while the surge was at 42kmh and I was off, with about about 10km to go to Sorrento.

I arrived at Sorrento with a ride time of 3:08 which was avg speed of 30.3, the fastest I have ever riden 95km, avg hr about 150, avg cadence 85.

We regrouped at Sorrento, all arriving pretty close together. Taking Warwicks advice we got our tickets and food and queued up straight away. There was some ferry confusion and we ended up catching the 10AM ferry, eating and resting, and preparing for the next leg.

Geelong

The second leg was more of a blur, Michael and I left the C3 to do the detour for the 250, and we filled our bottles and set off. There was a headwind in Queenscliff, and we pushed into it, hoping for a fast group, non came, we took a wrong turn adding about 5km to our total.

We kept riding, following the meandering senseless course, enjoying the freeway crusing over 30kmh, caught up with Jim S and the km's clicked quickly, and then we had to take that rotten turn off to Weribee, and the road surface got bad and the ride boring. I hit some kind of wall at about 30km to go, my legs were strong, but I couldn't get my heart rate above 150, we hit the hot head wind in Altona, I cursed the flat senseless course with no landmarks, then finally we saw the bridge, which made it all worthwhile.

Michael and I pulled into Alexandra Gardens at about 4:25pm, and the finishing chute was very cool, and very welcoming. We stored the bikes, got coffee, food, water and sat down, exhausted.

Second leg stats, 122.7km, 4:46, agv hr 137, avg speed 25.7, avg cadence 81.

Total ride time under 7:54 for 217.7km by my computer, which I am pretty happy with.

While Michael and I rested, we spotted Warwick, and Rob, and Jim, and then the C3-1 turned up Stephan and Dave had lost Duncan with 30km to go. Duncan emerged later after some assistance with rehydration.

It was a most excellent weekend.
